If I told someone about this article, the understandable response would be 'yawn'. Understandable to those uneducated beasts who don't grasp the importance of curtains. This article was for me two years ago. Two years ago when I got nervous and went with a high street name instead of doing the research. I have previously mentioned that this ended up being an expensive mistake. So for you great people, we've dug around and created a list of true masters of the curtain craft. For assistance with budgeting, we've asked them to quote a price for a set of pencil pleat curtains with a width of 167cm & a drop of 228cm. Obviously, there are lots of things that will change the quoted prices, but it's a good way for you to make a definitive decision as to whether a new set of curtains is on the horizon. And if they aren't, we've created the off-the-rack curtain gallery. There are some real humdingers in there.
This may not be of use now, but like our 'Favourite Dealers, ' we hope you can file this away for a time when you might need it or perhaps a friend is doing up their house, and you can forward it to them and be their curtain knight in chintzy armour. Either way, we've researched, so you don't have to.
If there are any other things you would like us to research, do let us know, we want this Substack to be filled with fun and genuine assistance for our subscribers, as your support is so important to us.
I have a small business working from a dedicated workroom in our converted Chapel in West Berkshire. I specialise in hand-made curtains and blinds, lined and interlined using traditional methods. I can advise on the best window treatments for a space and offer a lovely selection of fabrics.
Rough costs to make a pair of interlined curtains with a hand-made pinch pleat heading, one and a half widths wide to suit a pole/track length of approx 160cms would be in the region of £400 exclusive of fabric and lining.

One of our unique offerings is we have over 40,000 designer fabrics to choose from including brands such as Morris & Co, Liberty and Sanderson.
For this reason, our prices can vary a lot depending on fabric choice, size, heading, lining and trimming. For a pair of unlined pencil pleat curtains w167 x d228, the price would be from about £350 but the choice of fabric would alter this significantly and a Liberty or Morris & Co fabric from £1,000.
We offer samples to help our customers find their favourite fabric and have measuring guides online to support the customer choose the size and style of curtains.

In order to answer some of your questions about Tinsmiths’ Made to Measure service it might help to direct you to its portal on our main website: Tinsmiths - Made To Measure. This is a really good starting point for anyone wishing to use or find out more about our curtain and blind-making service because it includes lots of useful information about measuring, heading styles etc. And importantly, it includes a Price Guide which gives different options for lining/interlining etc. These prices are a guide to the making costs – once a fabric has been chosen then that cost is added on top.
Tinsmiths Made To Measure - Price Guide Curtains We would always advice that customers then request a quote from our Fabric and Made to Measure specialist. This can be undertaken via the website or by calling into our fabric showroom in Ledbury. Using the website Price Guide for a pair of curtains based on the dimensions you gave, Width 167cm x Drop 228cm with a pencil pleat, the making cost would be as follows:
Lined curtains with pencil pleat heading - £284. Lined and interlined curtains with pencil pleat heading - £381
Then on top of this, we would add the cost and amount of fabric chosen. If customers wish to visit our Ledbury fabric showroom, we can offer the above information in person. Open Wednesday – Saturday 9.30am-5pm.

Chloe Jonason Interiors - Bespoke Service
Curtains are priced per width of making. For a window 167cm wide with that drop you are looking at 3 widths of making so essentially as follows: One pair of Curtains - Making £ 360.00. Fabric required 8 metres ( based on a plain fabric - with patterns, we have to factor the repeat in )
Lining and interlining - 8 metres required - £ 200.00. We always use blackout in bedrooms and suggest contrast linings for rooms where the curtains are visible from the front, it adds a nice detail—plus VAT and installation.
Curtain Poles and track systems are very much specified according to the client’s taste and depending on whether it’s a period property or a new build. It largely depends on the function and combining finishes for the aesthetic of the property. We work with specialist suppliers who can offer a range of finishes from antique brass to charcoal to more functional track systems for commercial spaces.
Our curtain fitters make bespoke covered lath and fascia systems on site to angled and curved bay windows, and where a client requests, all light is minimised, such as in bedrooms.
We are very much a bespoke, hand-holding service where we offer a full curtain design consultation in the client’s home to help them with making style, choosing the appropriate solution for the window, it could be Roman blinds or curtains depending on the function, fabric choices and then going through poles & tracks where applicable.
In terms of our service - As we also have a design background along with curtain making, we can advise on fabrics to work with existing decorative and interior schemes and have accounts with all the well-known Designer brands.
We carry our own range of plains prices from £ 40 per metre to include Double width Laundered and sheer linens, so these are a good choice for areas that require plains and a large meterage. It’s essentially like an interior design service for your windows. We do all the research and sourcing and bring the window treatment solution to the client.

Wonder Stitches supplies and fit bespoke made-to-measure curtains and blinds, which are designed with love and affection. Our curtains are hand-finished using traditional methods and the finest materials, machinery and accessories in our fully equipped workroom. All of our work is handmade by a member of our team in our Teddington Studio in West London.
Often preferred as an alternative to curtains on windows and spaces that require something less imposing and more compact yet made of fabric and design. A Roman blind packs the advantage of requiring much less fabric than curtains, thus making it a perfect long-term investment without breaking the bank!
Difficult or intricate windows do not faze us. We really do love a challenge and love to find solutions whenever possible. Cushions are the comfort pieces of your home. They are the ultimate relaxation provider and everyday necessity. These beautiful creations are handcrafted at Wonder Stitches. We love to provide you with your dream designs and options.
If you really love the fabric of your existing curtains, but you are bored with curtains, or perhaps you moved, and curtains don’t suit the style of your new place, we can convert your old curtains into fabulous Roman blinds. The blinds below were made by recycling an old pair of curtains our clients loved and wanted to repurpose.
We carefully chose the best parts of fabric and used them to make these beautiful Roman blinds.
A pair of handmade pencil pleat curtains of that size would roughly be £285.00 plus the main fabric cost (depending on clients choices) (W167 x drop 228 cm pencil pleat set of curtains)

Truly, this is the best money I spend every month. Thank you. If you’re ever in the mood to write about a creative approach to kitchens I’d be grateful - we’re about to take on an Edwardian house reno and the lion’s share of our budget is likely to be spent on cellar tanking (sexy!), roofing and an EICR. I feel like a cheap kitchen is a false economy but maybe not? Happy to be proved wrong!
+1 for the London Curtain Girls! We used them for curtains and blinds throughout our house in SE London. Mary and Laragh are the real deal - kind, responsive, creative, and do beautiful work. They also gave us a great bamboo blind recommendation.
