If I told someone about this article, the understandable response would be 'yawn'. Understandable to those uneducated beasts who don't grasp the importance of curtains. This article was for me two years ago. Two years ago when I got nervous and went with a high street name instead of doing the research. I have previously mentioned that this ended up being an expensive mistake. So for you great people, we've dug around and created a list of true masters of the curtain craft. For assistance with budgeting, we've asked them to quote a price for a set of pencil pleat curtains with a width of 167cm & a drop of 228cm. Obviously, there are lots of things that will change the quoted prices, but it's a good way for you to make a definitive decision as to whether a new set of curtains is on the horizon. I have a small business working from a dedicated workroom in our converted Chapel in West Berkshire. I specialise in hand-made curtains and blinds, lined and interlined using traditional methods. I can advise on the best window treatments for a space and offer a lovely selection of fabrics.
Rough costs to make a pair of interlined curtains with a hand-made pinch pleat heading, one and a half widths wide to suit a pole/track length of approx 160cms would be in the region of £400 exclusive of fabric and lining.

For this reason, our prices can vary a lot depending on fabric choice, size, heading, lining and trimming. For a pair of unlined pencil pleat curtains w167 x d228, the price would be from about £350 but the choice of fabric would alter this significantly and a Liberty or Morris & Co fabric from £1,000.

Curtains are priced per width of making. For a window 167cm wide with that drop you are looking at 3 widths of making so essentially as follows: One pair of Curtains - Making £ 360.00. Fabric required 8 metres ( based on a plain fabric - with patterns, we have to factor the repeat in )
Lining and interlining - 8 metres required - £ 200.00. We always use blackout in bedrooms and suggest contrast linings for rooms where the curtains are visible from the front, it adds a nice detail—plus VAT and installation.
Curtain Poles and track systems are very much specified according to the client’s taste and depending on whether it’s a period property or a new build. It largely depends on the function and combining finishes for the aesthetic of the property. We work with specialist suppliers who can offer a range of finishes from antique brass to charcoal to more functional track systems for commercial spaces.
Our curtain fitters make bespoke covered lath and fascia systems on site to angled and curved bay windows, and where a client requests, all light is minimised, such as in bedrooms.
We are very much a bespoke, hand-holding service where we offer a full curtain design consultation in the client’s home to help them with making style, choosing the appropriate solution for the window, it could be Roman blinds or curtains depending on the function, fabric choices and then going through poles & tracks where applicable.
In terms of our service - As we also have a design background along with curtain making, we can advise on fabrics to work with existing decorative and interior schemes and have accounts with all the well-known Designer brands.
We carry our own range of plains prices from £ 40 per metre to include Double width Laundered and sheer linens, so these are a good choice for areas that require plains and a large meterage. It’s essentially like an interior design service for your windows. We do all the research and sourcing and bring the window treatment solution to the client.
